GSE Rentals can offer the SeaSPY range of magnetometers for sale or rental. This robust, reliable and extremely accurate sensor has proven to be a very popular alternative to cesium magnetometers
The 3000m depth rated unit operate on our 6km towcables without the need for a high voltage power supply as required by the Geometrics Cesium Magnetometers. The deep water rated SeaSPY on our rental pool includes an altimeter and a depth sensor as standard. Performance is identical to our standard 300m rated systems.
The SeaSPY's are proton magnetometers that are enhanced by a unique quantum principle known as the Overhauser effect. This effect allows the sensor to be polarized with a low power, high frequency magnetic field, instead of a high power DC magnetic field. The advantage over conventional proton magnetometers is that SeaSPY can measure magnetic field while polarizing, retain maximum sensitivity at sampling up to 1Hz, and deliver between one and two orders of magnitude better precision, without using a lot of power. The advantage over the optically pumped sensors like cesium is that the SeaSPY does not produce heading error, have a dead zone or display temperature drift.
One significant, and insurmountable problem with cesium, optically pumped magnetometers is the "dead zone" that exists around the sensor's poles and equator. If the sensor is not oriented properly in the Earth's magnetic field, it will produce no signal or many noisy, spikey data. SeaSPY sensors do not have a dead zone. Regardless of how the sensor is oriented in the EarthÂ’s field the data will be consistently precise, accurate, and reliable.
SeaSPY magnetometers produce very high absolute accuracy. As a result, Overhauser sensors are used as a secondary calibration standard in magnetic observatories around the world. This means that heading error is non-existent in SeaSPY, and that makes data processing operations such as levelling and tie-line correction much easier.
The 3000m SeaSpy has a slightly larger diameter than the unit shown in the photograph above.
